Looking for designer fabrics in Malaysia

By shambie adzhan • Apr 18th, 2008 • Category: HELP!, HOW TO

*bleh* I’ve spent hours google-ing for Anna Maria Horner’s Chocolate Lollipop, Heather Bailey’s Freshcut™, Sandi Henderson’s Ginger Blossom and Joel Dewberry’s Aviary Fabric Collections. Why can’t we have this kinda fabrics in Malaysia’s store?

Chocolate Lollipop COllection by Anna Maria Horner

Ginger Blossom Collection by Sandi Henderson

Aviary Collection by Joel Dewberry

Aren’t they gorgeous?

If I buy all these from the overseas company, it will definitely gonna cost me bones and limbs! Err… But I absolutely fell in love with these fabrics and didn’t found any similar design here in Malaysia. Or perhaps I didn’t do enough digging?

Cost for these lovely fabrics?

I did survey the online market price for designer’s fabrics. Overall, for 100% lightweight cotton the maximum price is USD9.00 per yard (which is less 3inches than a meter). Yes, the fabrics are sold by yard, measured in 1/4 yard increments. Minimum cut for each fabrics is usually a half yard.

International Shipping, err to Malaysia?

Most of the online store that provide international shipping, use the most economical way to ship small international orders using Global Priority Mail Flat-Rate Envelopes. And delivery is within 4-6 business days but will take up longer than that due to being held by the customs. This envelope is USD11.00 each and will be able to hold 5-10yards (based on fabrics weight, width and type).

Is there any tax charges?

I ordered a yew yards from 2 stores, and the packages arrived safely to my home in 10 days time… with NO TAX charges. *phew*

I’m not sure about this part, but there was no tax charges when ordering from these online stores. (will update this part later, still unsure bout this)

But I did call the PosMalaysia’s Customer Service, they failed to provide me good answers on these matters. *bleh

Can we get these in Malaysia’s store, I’m uncomfortable with online purchases?

I dunno bout this since I’m not in KL or any big cities and will not be able to do enough surveys. That’s why I just love shopping through online stores, it save me a lot of time. Everything is at the point of your fingers, and just hafta wait for the package to arrive. hehe

So, if you happened to know any good stores in Malaysia that carry these lovely designer’s fabrics, do leave comments yeah!! Will appreciate it so much! ???

Now, MY selection of online stores!

This list is based on likeness;

  1. Little Cherubs - US *you can get Chocolate Lollipop for USD8.20/yard
  2. Little Cherubs Heirloom eBay Store
  3. Cia’s Palette - US *i love Alexander Henry - In Crowd for USD8.75/yard
  4. Boqinana eBay Store - China *cheap and funky
  5. Contemporary Cloth - US
  6. *will be added from time to time

That’s it! Hope this will help you in findings gorgeous fabrics for your crafty/quilting needs.

There’s this craft store in SS2, Petaling Jaya, that sells these really lovely fabrics. But was perdy darn expensive. But I think you might like them. Anyways, anytime you coming down here? Staying here ke apa? I’d so love to joint projects, collab with you! Not only photos, but ideas as well, maybe joint something with chocolah!

I can’t really sew, but I really love such hand made items. Malas is one of the reasons.

Lately, I’m into surface pattern designs, I’m hoping to look for a place where I can print those patterns on fabrics or huge sheets of papers to turn into wrapping papers. Hmm.

Comment by shambie adzhan

**seriously, ade jual dekat SS2? the same fabrics ke?

so, you are into pattern design? herm leh buat duit ni kalau u print on fabrics :P kalau dekat oversea, kite boleh print dekat kedai with minimum yards.. dekat malaysia i dunno lah

*collab with you n chocolah?~ wow menarik!! im honored…. wo0t! kalau nak diskusi2 lagi, boleh IM me okeh~

once, i found a blog, expat. she bought online. dia kena pickup the kain at KLIA post office., plus tax. if not mistaken, tax pon mahal.
few months back, i ada pegi Jakel. their cotton not bad. around RM 30 ++ onwards.

I just open my new store ( kedai kain) kat Etsy. All are invited to browse sekarang tengah sale, promo for new store. Jemput browsing and let me know of US fabrics that you like to be included at my shop. I am currently stocking with Amy Butler’s and Heather Bailey’s fabrics. I can also promote your products that you make with these fabrics, just e-mail me pictures of your handcrafted items I would like to post them in my fabric blog.

Comment by shambie adzhan

hi Nita, thanx for dropping by! ;-)
Ada sale eh, and USD7 per yard? what a bargain~ :aww:

Tengoklah..mungkin saya akan beli kot.. huhu baru lepas beli kain 2 minggu lepas :panic:

and actually, im looking for earthy tone, nak buat kusyen utk kerusi jati. Most probably Joel Dewberry Ginseng kot~ tapi home deco lagi mahal and shipping pon mahal sikit kan :pfft:

anyway, good luck on your sales! :inlove:

Comment by Nita

Joel Dewberry Ginseng memang cantik. Memang home deco fabrics mahal, but kain tahan lama sikit tak apa mahal, kira investment kan. Thank you, memang susah nak promote new shop. But I enjoy meeting crafters and seeing their beautiful handcrafted items. I ldo love the purses and clutches you sell. Keep on crafting.

Comment by Sing Yee

Those fabrics are absolutely chic. :P I’ve searched too in local textile shops, but I’ve never seen any pure cotton fabric with the likes of Heather Bailey and Amy Butler. :( Do you like Amy Butler’s designs? I think her fabrics are the best. :) What about Japanese cotton fabric? I’ve always wanted to have those really cute Japanese fabrics in natural/neutral colours with animal prints on them…. *drools*

Oh… And I linked you on my website. I should have done that a loooong time ago, but I always forgot. ^-^” Eheh…

Comment by shambie adzhan

I love Amy Butler’s design but I’m more into Alexander Henry’s or Michael Miller’s as their design are more bold and funky. I love the rockstar, piratey and disco themes!!!

Japanese Fabric? i noticed that most japanese fabrics have cute woodland creatures :cheer: so kawaii~

I love those fabric too. really wish can find one here at Malaysia. I agree international online shipping are very costly. I’m a seamstress and i’m sick and boring of sewing plain fabric (play safe…) Hoping someone will import a bulk of it and sell here online in Malaysia. I will be much more delighted. Do let me know when we already have ya! *wink*

Hi, I browse through fabric store in Malaysia, and found this site.
Just want to ask if there’s any fabric shop around K.L. where i can find nice, cute fabric(preferable with affordable price :hehe: ) ?
Thanks.

It seems like everyone’s looking for fabrics by AMH, AB dan yang seangkatan =) Anyway, it’s great that you get the chance to buy em. No such luck for me as I find them too costly (shipping etc)

I get my supply from Ikea, Kamdar, Nagoya and Harrisons. I’d say Ikea’s fabrics are of good quality to make bags. Plus they’re bright and cheery enough.

Like everyone else, I do wish someone would sell those designer fabrics here in Malaysia.

dzaliqa’s last blog post..Medium Sized Tote
